In 1989 Dr. Jorgen Vaaben Andersen joined
the newly-formed EasyCopy Company. His great expertise in
digital imaging and image compression was instrumental in
developing the EasyCopy Software and JPEG Pro - a developer
toolkit (SDK) widely used in medical imaging systems (Picture
Archiving and Communication Systems - PACS).
Dr. Andersen was a
recognized world expert in image compression prior to
joining EasyCopy. In the mid 1980s a group of European
telephone companies started a project to find a method to
compress images to make use of the telephone network for
transporting images over the ISDN protocol (64 kbit/sec).
The project was partly funded by the EU – ESPRIT ‘87.
The algorithm
chosen by the project was proposed by the Danish telephone
company KTAS (now TDC). Shortly thereafter an ISO
standardization group was formed and this algorithm was
presented as a possible basis for the new JPEG standard.
The
name "JPEG" stands for
Joint Photographic Experts Group, the name of the
committee that created the standard. The group was organized
in 1986, issuing a standard in 1992, which was approved in
1994 as ISO 10918-1.
Dr. Andersen who had
written a large part of the algorithm proposed by the
European group recalls the long meetings and heated
discussions among the group members to make sure they made
the right decision between algorithms presented by American
and Japanese companies in addition to the European one.
Time has proven that
the right choices were made by the group since the JPEG
format has truly been paving the road for sharing, storing
and transmitting images in digital photography and on the
Internet. The standard is still almost 20 years later the
predominant method for storing and transmitting still image
data.
Dr. Andersen has been a
major contributor to EasyCopy’s success in digital
imaging, providing high quality solutions for image
compression, conversion and plotting.
